Research History

Year 1 Research

The projects in the first year of the PHEV Research Center will concentrate on three main topics. These three topics have been discussed at length and approved by the PHEV Research Center’s Advisory Council.

  • Consumer Behavior and Market Research
  • Vehicle Design Research
  • Environmental Impacts Research

The projects developed under these research topics are discussed in more detail below.

PHEV Research Roadmap

The Research Roadmap will establish priorities for PHEV research within the state of California and recommend research funding. The Research Roadmap begins with examining the current societal trends and policy drivers that are pushing forward PHEV technology. This is followed by a comprehensive analysis of the current and ongoing landscape of PHEV related research, development and demonstration efforts in California, around the United States and the rest of the world. The PHEV field is a rapidly growing and changing area with many research entities and small companies entering the field in various areas related to PHEVs, such as public charging infrastructure, PHEV conversions, and battery development and recycling technologies. As such, it is challenging to keep up‐to‐date with the constantly changing field. After evaluating the ongoing research, a gaps and opportunities analysis was completed to find the holes in on‐going research and to find opportunities where the state of California can have an impact on PHEV research, development and demonstration. These opportunities for research are prioritized on a timeline for each of the six primary research areas: vehicle architecture and control systems, batteries, infrastructure impacts, consumer behaviors, codes and standards, and environmental benefits and lifetime costs.

The PHEV Research Roadmap is in the final review stages and will be available as a pdf here once approved. Below, you can see some of the research tasks that have been identified on the timeline developed for the Roadmap.
